Joint Pain Treatment

If you have pain stemming from joint inflammation, then you may benefit from a steroid injection. Typically, a joint injection is recommended for those who do not respond to other conservative treatments, such as oral anti-inflammatory medication, rest or physical therapy.

A steroid injection is a minimally invasive procedure that can temporarily relieve pain caused by an inflamed joint. The cause of joint pain (arthritis, injury, degeneration) is not well understood. The procedure has two purposes. First, it can be used as a diagnostic test to see if the pain is actually coming from the joint. Second, it can be used as a treatment to relieve inflammation and pain caused by various conditions.

Steroid injections can reduce inflammation and can be effective when delivered directly into the painful area. Injections can be made in the following areas: facet joints of the spine, sacroiliac joint and coccyx, hip joint, shoulder, elbow, hand, knee, ankle, and foot.

S.I. Joint Injections

The sacroiliac joint is a large joint in your lower back and buttocks region. When the S.I. joint becomes painful, it can cause pain in its immediate region or it can refer pain into your groin, abdomen, hip, buttock or leg.

A sacroiliac joint injection serves several purposes. First, by placing numbing medicine into the joint, you will shortly know if that joint is the source of the pain. That is, if you obtain complete relief of your main pain while the joint is numb it means this joint is more likely than not your pain source. Furthermore, time-release cortisone will be injected into the joint to reduce any presumed inflammation, which on many occasions can provide long-term pain relief.

There are numerous ways to treat sacroiliac joint dysfunction but the sacroiliac joint injections work powerfully to reduce your inflammation and can provide months of relief.
